N. KOREA ANNOUNCES HYDROGEN BOMB TEST

North Korea's state-run media says the country has conducted its first hydrogen bomb test in the northeast of the country.
It's the fourth nuclear test by Pyongyang. The last was in February 2013. But it's the first hydrogen bomb test. Experts say the North is aiming to boost national prestige by carrying out the test before leader Kim Jong Un's birthday on Friday. But they say the country is set to face fierce criticism from the international community, including China.
South Korea's weather officials say they detected a man-made tremor in the northern part of North Korea on Wednesday morning. They say the tremor was estimated at a magnitude of 4.3. Instruments tracked the tremor to an area in the northeast, close to Poongkye-ri, the site of North Korea's previous nuclear tests.
Japanese and U.S. diplomatic sources say U.S. forces have sent aircraft to airspace around the Korean Peninsula. They will collect air samples to see if radioactive materials have been emitted. The U.S. military conducted similar flights when the North conducted nuclear tests in the past.

北朝鮮 “水爆実験”

北朝鮮の国営メディアは、北朝鮮が初めての水爆実験を国の北東部で行ったと伝えています。これは、北朝鮮として２０１３年２月以来となる４回目の核実験ですが、水爆の実験は初めてのことです。
専門家の見方では、キム・ジョンウン（金正恩）第１書記の誕生日を金曜日（１月８日）に控え、水爆実験を行うことで国威を発揚するねらいがあるということです。しかし同時に、中国を含む国際社会からの激しい非難にさらされることになると専門家は指摘しています。
韓国の気象庁によりますと、水曜日（１月６日）の朝、北朝鮮の北部で人工的な揺れを感知したということです。揺れの規模を示すマグニチュードは推定４.３で、計器が揺れを感知したのは北朝鮮の北東部、これまで北朝鮮が核実験を行ってきたプンゲリ（豊渓里）付近だということです。
日本とアメリカの外交筋の話では、アメリカ軍が朝鮮半島付近の上空に航空機を派遣し、放射性物質が放出されたかどうかを確認するために大気のサンプルを採取するということです。アメリカ軍はこれまでにも、北朝鮮が核実験を行った際には同じように航空機を派遣してきました。
