APP TACKLING ILLICIT IVORY TRADE

Thai authorities have started using a new smartphone application to help them combat illegal trade in ivory. The app can distinguish between Asian and African ivory.
The authorities used it on Tuesday to spot-check statues supposedly made of legal Asian ivory at a specialty shop in Bangkok. Two of five products turned out to be made of African ivory and were confiscated. The shop owner was told to report to police for questioning.
This app, together with a portable X-ray analyzer, can differentiate between the two kinds of ivory, based on the volume of chemical elements they contain. Conventional DNA testing took two weeks to make the distinction.
In Thailand, it's legal to trade ivory taken from domesticated Asian elephants, but it's illegal to trade smuggled African ivory. The country is said to be one of the hotbeds of the illicit trade.

アプリで違法象牙を取り締まり

タイの当局は、象牙の違法取り引き撲滅に役立つ、新たなスマートフォンアプリを使い始めました。このアプリは象牙がアジア象のものか、アフリカ象のものかを判別できます。
当局は火曜日（１２月２９日）、バンコクにある専門店でこのアプリを使い、合法なアジア産の象牙で作られたとされる彫像の抜き取り検査を行いました。（すると、）５つの像のうち２つがアフリカ象のものと分かり、押収されました。店の所有者は、取り調べのため警察に出頭するよう命じられました。
このアプリは、携帯型のエックス線分析装置と組み合わせて使うことで、象牙に含まれる化学成分の量をもとに象牙がアフリカ産かアジア産かを識別することができます。従来のＤＮＡ検査では、識別に２週間かかっていました。
タイでは、飼育されたアジア象からとれる象牙の売買は法律で認められていますが、密輸されたアフリカ象の象牙取り引きは禁じられています。タイは、象牙の違法取り引きの温床の１つとなっていると言われています。
