TSAI'S VICTORY DOMINATES HEADLINES

The landslide victory by Taiwan's opposition leader Tsai Ing-wen dominated newspaper headlines on the island on Sunday. Tsai will be Taiwan's first female president.
The leader of the Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, garnered more than 6.89 million votes from more than 56 percent of voters. She beat her two opponents by wide margins. Front pages of newspapers on the morning after the election showed pictures of Tsai in front of cheering supporters. Some banners proclaimed, "The birth of Taiwan's first female president."
Citizens also cast ballots for parliamentary seats. The DPP won 68 seats in the 113-seat legislature, up from 40 before the poll. It's the first time the party has won a majority. Newspapers describe the results as a total victory for the DPP and say it's expected to give Tsai solid political control. She is to take office in May.
Attention is now focused on her stance toward mainland China. Tsai has criticized the governing Nationalist Party's policy for moving closer to Beijing too quickly.

台湾総統選 野党民進党が圧勝

台湾の野党を率いる蔡英文（さい・えいぶん）氏が（選挙で）地滑り的な勝利を収め、日曜日（１月１７日）には台湾の新聞各紙が１面トップで報じました。蔡氏は、台湾初の女性の総統となります。
民進党＝ＤＰＰ主席の蔡氏は、６８９万票以上、得票率で５６パーセント余りを獲得し、ほかの２人の候補に大差をつけて圧勝しました。選挙から一夜明けた朝の新聞各紙は、支持者の声援に応える蔡氏の写真を１面に掲載しました。見出しには、「台湾で初めてとなる女性の総統の誕生」と掲載しているものもありました。
台湾の議会・立法院の選挙も（総統選挙と）同時に行われ、民進党が１１３議席のうち６８議席を獲得し、改選前の４０議席から躍進しました。民進党が過半数を獲得するのは初めてで、新聞各紙はこの結果を民進党の完全勝利だと伝えるとともに、蔡氏が安定した政権運営を実現できる見込みだと報じています。蔡氏は、５月に総統に就任することになっています。
現在は、蔡氏がどういう姿勢で中国と向き合うのかに関心が集まっています。蔡氏は、急速に中国と関係を深めてきた与党国民党の政策を批判してきました。
