AFGHAN ARTIFACTS HEADING HOME

The former director of Afghanistan's national museum is in Japan to check cultural artifacts from his country. They've been preserved here, but will be returned to the museum.
Omara Khan Masoudi told NHK he thanks Japanese specialists for protecting more than 100 artifacts taken out of Afghanistan during 30 years of conflict there. The cultural assets, seen as symbols of the Silk Road civilization, include wall paintings and Buddhist statues.
Masoudi said he felt the happiest he'd ever been in his life to see the pieces, and Japan looking after them was a big gift to the Afghan people. Masoudi said he is considering displaying them in an exhibition in Afghanistan.

"This exhibition will introduce our ancient civilization, rich culture, and also the unique art of our country."

He added that such an exhibition would showcase the charms of Afghan culture at home and abroad.
Before the artifacts are returned to Afghanistan, they'll be exhibited in Tokyo in April.

アフガニスタン文化財 日本から返還へ

アフガニスタンの国立博物館の前館長が、アフガニスタンから流失した文化財の確認のために来日しています。これら文化財は日本で保護されていましたが、アフガニスタンの博物館に返還されることになっています。
オマラ・ハーン・マスーディー前館長はＮＨＫが行ったインタビューの中で、３０年にわたる内戦の間にアフガニスタンから持ち出された１００点以上の文化財を、日本の専門家が保管してきたことに感謝を表明しました。壁画や仏像などを含むこれら文化財は、シルクロード文化の象徴と考えられています。マスーディー前館長は、文化財を目にしたときは人生で最も幸せな瞬間で、日本がこの文化財を大切に保管してくれたことはアフガニスタンの国民にとって大きな贈り物だと語りました。マスーディー前館長は、アフガニスタンでの展示会でこの文化財を公開することを計画しているとしたうえで、「この展示会は、アフガニスタンの古代文明、豊かな文化、そしてアフガニスタン特有の芸術を紹介するものになるでしょう」と語り、このような展示会はアフガニスタン文化の魅力を国内外に披露するものになると付け加えました。
この文化財は、アフガニスタンに返還される前に、４月に東京で展示される予定です。
