JAPAN FINDS RARE-METAL TROVE IN DEEP SEA

A deep-sea survey in the Pacific Ocean has paid off for Japanese researchers. They've discovered rare metals near a coral reef southeast of Tokyo.
The find includes cobalt, which is essential in the manufacture of high-tech industrial products. It's been found around Japan before, but at a shallower depth. This time, researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology went deeper, and they found rocks containing rare metals in wide areas near the Ogasawara Island chain.
They brought up some of the samples to examine. They say rocks from deeper waters tend to have higher densities of rare metals. Team leader Katsuhiko Suzuki says his team was surprised at the amount of rocks containing rare metals at a previously untapped depth.

Other rare metals, including platinum and nickel, have been found in seas around Japan since 2009.

日本近海にレアメタル

日本の研究者たちが行っている太平洋での深海調査が、実を結びました。東京の南東のサンゴ礁近くで、レアメタルを発見したのです。
発見されたものの中には、最先端の工業製品の製造に欠かせないコバルトが含まれています。コバルトは日本近海のより浅い海底で、以前見つかっていました。今回は、海洋研究開発機構がより深い海底を調査し、レアメタルを含んだ岩石が小笠原諸島付近の広い範囲に存在していることが分かったのです。
海洋研究開発機構は、詳しく調べるために、いくつかのサンプルも採取しました。海洋研究開発機構によりますと、深い場所から採取される岩石ほど、含まれるレアメタルの密度が高くなる傾向があるということです。
鈴木勝彦ユニットリーダーは、これまで手つかずだった深海に膨大な量のレアメタルを含む岩石が存在していることに驚いたということで、「日本が資源大国になるように貢献していきたい。それが将来に向けた計画です」と話しています。
プラチナやニッケルなどのほかのレアメタルも、２００９年以降、日本近海で見つかっています。
