MEETING 1,000 YEARS AFTER SPLIT

Two Christian leaders have set aside tensions going back almost 1,000 years to hold a landmark meeting. Pope Francis of the Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill got together in Cuba. It was the first time the heads of their churches have spoken since Christianity split in 1054.
The pope and patriarch signed a 30-point declaration that stresses the importance of dialogue and reconciliation.

"We spoke as brothers. We have the same baptism. We are bishops. We spoke of our churches and we agreed that the road ahead is one of unity."

"Based on our conversation, I feel confident in saying the two churches can work together to defend Christians throughout the world."

The declaration calls on the international community to help end the violence in Syria and Iraq. It says communication between religious faiths is vital to achieving that goal, and it condemns all acts of terror.

東西キリスト教会 トップが会談

キリスト教の指導者２人が、ほぼ１,０００年前から続く対立を棚上げして、歴史的な会談を行いました。ローマ・カトリック教会のフランシスコ法王と、ロシア正教会のキリル総主教とが、キューバで面会したのです。両教会のトップによる会談は、１０５４年にキリスト教会が（東の正教会と西のカトリック教会に）分裂して以降、初めてのことです。
フランシスコ法王とキリル総主教は、対話と融和の重要性を強調する３０項目の共同宣言に署名しました。
フランシスコ法王は、「私たちは兄弟として話しました。同じように洗礼を受けましたし、共に司教です。それぞれの教会のことを話し、行く手には統一に向けた道のりがあることを確認し合いました」と語りました。キリル総主教は、「私たちの対話を土台に、世界中のキリスト教徒を守るため、２つの教会が協力し合うことができると自信を持って言えます」と述べました。
共同宣言では、シリアやイラクでの暴力行為を終わらせるため、国際社会に協力を求めています。また、その目的を達成するためには異なる信仰を持つもの同士の対話が不可欠だと指摘するとともに、あらゆるテロ行為を非難しています。
