INDONESIA HALTS TRAIN PROJECT

Indonesia's upcoming high-speed railway is raising concerns. One month after the groundbreaking ceremony, construction has yet to begin.
The planned 140-kilometer rail line will connect Jakarta and Bandung. Japan and China engaged in a bidding war for the project last year. The winner was China's proposal, which does not require Indonesia to contribute funds. It also projected construction would take three years, or two years less than the timeline in Japan's proposal.
Indonesia's transportation officials have yet to give the go-ahead for construction. The officials say plans have only been submitted for five kilometers of the line, and documents have not been fully translated from Chinese.

The officials also say measures against earthquakes are insufficient. There are three active faults along the planned route. The firm in charge of construction maintains that China's high-speed trains continue to meet the world's highest safety standards, but Indonesian media are starting to question the project's future.

（しかし、）インドネシア運輸省からの建設開始の認可は、いまだに下りていません。インドネシア運輸省によりますと、建設計画は路線の５キロ分しか提出されておらず、一部は中国語から翻訳されていないということです。インドネシア鉄道総局長は、「驚いた。読めない書類を、どう評価したらいいというのだ」と話しています。
