SUU KYI AIDE ELECTED

Lawmakers in Myanmar have elected a close aide to Aung San Suu Kyi as the country's next president. She's barred from the top job because of the constitution written by the former military government.
Members of the parliament voted for the position, choosing between three candidates.

"We announce that Htin Kyaw has won the majority of votes and has been selected to be the president of Myanmar."

The 69-year-old studied in London and was a government official specializing in economics. He'll be the first president without a military background in more than half a century.
The other contestants will become vice presidents. They are Henry Vantriu, an upper house lawmaker from the ethnic Chin minority, and Myint Swe, who was backed by the military. All three will assume office on March 30th.

ミャンマー新大統領にスー・チー氏側近

ミャンマーの議会は、次の大統領にアウン・サン・スー・チー氏の側近を選出しました。スー・チー氏は、前の軍事政権が制定した憲法の規定で、大統領になることはできません。
議会では、３人の候補者から大統領を選ぶ投票が行われ、上院議長が「ティン・チョー氏が過半数の票を獲得し、ミャンマーの大統領に選ばれたことを発表します」と宣言しました。６９歳になるチョー氏は、ロンドン（の大学）で学び、経済政策担当の官僚を務めました。軍出身でない人物が大統領になるのは、この半世紀以上で初めてのことです。
（大統領に選ばれなかった）ほかの２人の候補者は、副大統領に就任することになります。（副大統領になるのは）少数民族「チン」出身の上院議員ヘンリー・バンティーユ氏と、軍の後押しを受けたミン・スエ氏です。３人はともに、３月３０日に就任する予定です。
