COMPUTER BEATS GO MASTER

An artificial intelligence program has defeated its human opponent in a five-game series in the ancient board game of "go." Google's AlphaGo beat South Korean "go" grandmaster Lee Se-dol in the final match.
Lee, one of the world's top players, took the lead in the early stages, but AlphaGo regained ground to win the five-hour game. Lee earned a win on Sunday after three consecutive losses. The software won the week-long series with a 4-1 score.
It had been widely believed that AI would not be able to defeat a human "go" player because of the immense number of possible board configurations. South Korean media outlets reported that a representative of the human race has been defeated by AI.

囲碁最強棋士 人工知能に１勝４敗

古くから伝わる「囲碁」というボードゲームの５番勝負で、人工知能のコンピューターソフトが人間を打ち負かしました。グーグルが開発した「ＡｌｐｈａＧｏ」が、韓国の囲碁の名人イ・セドル氏（９段）との最終戦に勝利しました。
イ９段は世界トップクラスの棋士で、序盤は優勢に対局を進めました。しかし「ＡｌｐｈａＧｏ」が盛り返して、５時間の対局を制しました。イ９段は３連敗したあと、日曜日（３月１３日）の対局には勝利しましたが、（結局）コンピューターソフトが１週間にわたる対戦を４勝１敗で制しました。
囲碁は盤上の（碁石の）配置パターンが膨大で、人工知能は人間には勝てないと広く考えられてきました。韓国メディアは、人類の代表が人工知能に負けたと報じています。
