Tanko-Bushi (Coal Miners' Song)
(Translated by Sadao Mazuka)
The moon has come out, come out the moon (a yoi yoi)
Over Miike Coal Mine hath the moon come out.
The chimney is so high, rising into the sky
I wonder if the moon chokes on the smoke (Sa no yoi yoi)
Far over one peak, two and three peaks away (a yoi yoi)
Blooming a cherry tree on the mountain
Though it is so beautifully blooming
No worthy, if no one comes to see it (Sa no yoi yoi)
If you say seriously about parting (a yoi yoi)
I can go away just now from you
If you can make me young of eighteen
Going with joy of my rejuvenation (Sa no yoi yoi)
Better than sleeping on the pillow of money (a yoi yoi)
I'd like to sleep on the arm pillow of you
I don’t mind that the house is old and run down
The moon will shine for us gently (Sa no yoi yoi)
A thousand or two thousand feet down of the shaft (a yoi yoi)
I suppose I can hear the sounds of the pickax
If I could be permitted to stay with him there
I'd like to dig out the black diamonds (Sa no yoi yoi)2009.7.22
