Urashima Taro
(By Mother Turkey)

old man Once upon a time there was a fisherman,
Urashima Taro who came down
To the castle Ryugujo under the sea,
Riding the back of the turtle he had saved.

Otohime-sama, the princess of the sea,
Treated him to big feasts day after day.
And fishes gave the grand dancing shows
While the time had flown away behind his joyful heart.

One day he noticed himself tired of them all
And wanted to say goodbye, again on the turtle.
So the princess, with the warning never opening it,
Gave him the souvenir of Tamate-bako.

When he came back to his dear old home,
He could see no home nor village dear to him.
Nobody greeted him with a word or so.
He was quite a stranger here in his native land.

Deep loneliness made him open the very souvenir.
What a magical casket of Tamate-bako!
Out of it came a big mass of strange white smoke.
Instantly Taro became an old man.
